Weekend word problem

Mr Spice eats 2 whole pies. Freddie eats 5 half pies. Who eats more?
Draw the fractions.

Mr spice eats 8 half chocolate fingers. Finn eats 5 whole chocolate fingers. Who has more? Draw the fraction

If Mr Spice eats 2 quarters of his 24 lollies and Jade eats 2/3 her 24 lollies, who eats more? Draw the fractions or show you working.

Mr Spice has 5/8 of a chocolate bar and then eats 6/3 of another one. How many chocolate bars has he eaten.

Advertising madness

Room 3 has been looking at advertising and persuading for our topic. We worked out that we need to create a problem, provide the solution and make the solution quick and easy. This insight will help us sell our products and we are now using it make our own commercials for an invented energy drink. Here is a few photos of students writing their scripts.

Inference lesson

Today Room 3 had a few students out for Rippa Rugby so we decided to do a cool little lesson on inference. Mr Spice wrote a quick story (you can read it below this post) about a stormy day where a student gets done in. It was all a bit of fun and Room 3 had to use clues from the story, giving evidence about who they thought was the killer. Here is a video of their inference.

Can you pick the guilty one?

Who did it?
Twisted limbs covered a crumpled body, bathed in a pool of red liquid. A small sharp spike protruded from the chest of the victim.
The crowd gathered around detective Spice in anticipation. Lashing the building with whips of rain, the wind was pushing through the cracks of every door and window. Crack! A flash of lightning found its way home, painting a blue glow upon that faces of the accused. Huddling around; attention was fixed on the central figure of the group, as he was pondering his next move like a hunter baiting a trap.

''We have 3 suspects'' Detective Spice said in an authoritative voice as he broke the curtain of silence.
''Who could it be?'' a voice whispered from the sea of blank faces.
''I feel scared'' another declared.
''To think a murderer could be among this class''
''Ahem!'' Mr Spice interrupted the conjecture with an intentional cough. His face evolved towards a more serious look, being devoid of any emotion whatsoever and pausing to speak.
'' Our first suspect is....". ''Freddie the Hat''
The collection of bodies parted, with heads fixed on the corner of the darkened room. A small, shadowy, menacing figure stepped forward. Wearing a huge overcoat; that covered his entire body from his shoulders down, Freddie the hat took the image of a cold hearted gangster. He tipped the brim of his accompanying top hat, as if it was an extension of his body.  Displaying a look of incredulity, Freddie began to speak in a gruff, and thick New York accent.
"Not my style see". ''I woulda sprayed full of lead, see''. '' Right from old Betsy here''.
Freddie opened his coat and the crowd could see long partially blackened Tommy gun, slung over his shoulder.
Detective Spice's arm shot towards his waist and brought back a small black item, that was held at arms length from his body.
''Put it down, Freddie the hat''. ''Now!''
''Don't worry, it's not loaded, see''
Freddie the Hat held his gun high in the air and flicked the small latch near the magazine. Click, the cartridge sprung out and bounced a few times at his feet.

Attention turned towards detective Spice once more.
''Our second suspect is Sneaky Sean the slipperiest man alive."
Sliding and twisting his way through the upright bodies of the crowd, slippery Sean wove his way to the front of the group.
''It wasssn't meeeee'' he hissed with a sharpened voice. Squinting his eyes and looking sideways, his eyeballs quickly darted left, then right. It'sss a ssstich up!'' I've been framed.
''Quick, search him" Detective Spice commanded with an urgent voice. Before he could slide away, two strong arms shot out and grasped slippery Sean by each armpit.
"Nothing" the the two imposing figures chanted to the anticipating crowd.

"Well..." "that leads us to our third suspect, the only other person who was near the victim"
Sugar coated Siobhan, the nicest girl in all of Auroa. When she walks flowers bloom, people smile and birds chirp. Her smile is like an angels, that blesses all who gaze upon it.
Doubtful, chatter began to rise amongst the onlookers.

"How could he even consider the sweetest person to ever walk the earth?, someone whispered.

''No one is above suspicion, "Search her quickly!''
The two  goons, were a little unsure about grabbing her, as if somehow it would bring bad luck upon them.
"Wait!" she said in a sugary voice and turned her bag upside down on the large table. A collection of trinkets bounced out onto the table and rattled to a standstill. Sugar plumb Siobahn's eyes suddenly widened, then returning to normal she barked, "see, nothing!"
The cluster on contents revealed themselves on the table top. A packet of tic-tacs, $40.00 in notes, a notebook, necklace and a hair brush with the plastic handle missing all lay there in a heap revealing nothing.

Hmmn we do have a problem detective Spice said suspiciously.
Who is the guilty one?

Wow! 10,000 hits

Our class blog has just passed the 10,000 hits mark and never in our wildest dreams did we believe we would get that many views of our blog. Well done to Room 3 for sharing their work, classroom and thoughts with the rest of the world. Our next aim is to hit 20,000, wish us the best of luck!

Value added products

For our inquiry, Room 3 has been learning about adding value to products. We talked about milk and how we could change it in order to make it worth more. We found through investigation and brainstorming that a whole lot of products come from milk, that are sold for much more than the milk is worth in its ordinary form. So we did a little experiment where we separated some milk into two different products, Ricotta cheese and whey.  Here are some of the pictures.

Awesome experiment

Room 3 has been talking about brands and Mr Spice suggested to them that certain brands can make some people behave differently. He used the example of two different kinds of milk and how some people thought one tasted better than the other. So today Room 3 put that to the test and Mr Spice poured a small bit of Coke in one cup marked 'cup B' and a small bit of Pepsi in a cup marked 'cup A'. The students did not know which one and had to guess the one that the coke was in. Easy right?
Well, we tallied up all the results and 20 out of our 28 students got it wrong! They couldn't tell at all and realised that maybe there is more to a product than what they think. Stay tuned for further investigations.

Te Reo lessons

Today Mr Tai came into class and taught Te Reo to room 3. We learned how to express our feelings and ask how somebody is feeling. Here is a snap of the action.

Topic started!

Today we started our topic for the next two terms. It is going to revolve around technology and economy with making a product to sell as the final goal. We had a look at advertising for students and parents by looking at lollie (candy) packets. We found that they use bright colours (yellow, red, white), were aimed at children (having cartoon pictures) and sometimes parents (real fruit flavour). It was a good lesson in thinking about how to sell something and who to sell it to.

Start of Term 2

Today is the first day of term 2 and we hope it will be a continuation of the great work we produced and shared last term. This term we will be working on being more presentable with our blog content and will be discussing in class what steps we need to make to improve the credibility of our personal blogs. Let the good times begin!
