Our trip to Lake Rotakare

On Wednesday the 13th of April 12 people from Auroa Primary School including six children from our class room2 and six children from room1.

We were heading to Lake Rotakare for a school trip. We left school at 9:10am and we arrived there at 10:00am and headed to the learning classroom to have a meet and greet, we had this great chance to have this opportunity because of one of our old teachers at our school Mrs Darbeshyre is taking six months of school to go training for being a scientist and she gets to do cool stuff like finding insects and bugs and discovering new unknown species.

We were lucky enough that she was willing to take us for a trip this time. All the children that were coming including myself had to wear warm protective clothes so we were protected in the bush we also had to bring a water bottle, a head torch, lunch, rain jacket and old bag to carry all our gear in.
First when we got up to the teaching area she appointed out all the groups giving them a clipboard and our tracking tunnel cards that we had to lay out all across the section.

To accomplish putting out the tracking tunnels
we had to climb up steep hills and cross rivers
and streams. All the tracking tunnels were numbered and for every odd number we had to put rabbit meat and peanut butter as bate and for every even number we just had to put peanut butter as bate, after we had finished all our tacking tunnels we headed back to the learning centre to have lunch.

Once we had lunch we went out into the bush and tried to find a Peripatus, the Peripatus is a   velvet worm that had many legs and looks like a
 caterpillar, we split up into two even groups and we had a four by four metres to search in for the

Peripatus which is sixteen square metres we had about thirty minutes to search as we were getting later in the day. Someone screamed from the other group and I went to look what it was, it was a Peripatus since we had found one they got a box to put it in then we went back to the learning centre and we packed our bags before departing. I had a great day and enjoyed the experience.

Should we change the flag or not?

This week in Room 2 we have been working on persuasive writing and our topic is; should we change the flag or not? Each child has to choose to whether they want to change or not. They then have to convince others through their reasoning and use of emotive language. Which flag would you choose the new one? Or the old one?

Room 4 took part in the MOA short film awards this year and here a 3 of our videos that made the finals.

A busy term

Room 4 have got down to work on our science and movie projects. For science we are looking at the elements and looking more closely at specific ones. Stay tuned for more updates.

Te Reo for Maori language week

Today we made a short video using Te Reo about asking each other where we are going.  Enjoy

Atoms

Room 4 has been looking at elements and discovered they are just different types of single atoms. We found that atoms have protons, neutrons and electrons. Our next step is to create some explain everything files about specific elements and the atoms they contain.

Matariki

This week Room 4 are looking at Matariki, which is the Maori new year. If you look up into the clear sky at night you will be able to see the star constellation. We are going to have an activity day about Matariki next week. Stay tuned

Moa awards

Room 4 have started writing our scripts for our MOA awards video. The students are hard at work coming up with great ideas and they spent the afternoon today brainstorming.

Science

Room 4 is has started our science unit and we are looking at the periodic table. We have started to investigate some of the elements on there starting with gold and hydrogen. Stay tuned for more.

Grace's Story

Mum can I  "help" yes" said mum. Can you please get the sugar. Mum what are we making? Mum said if we get the shapes  she will tell us yummy gingerbread men

Mum said I could roll the Dough. Me and my sister pressed the shapes into the Dough. Mum put the gingerbread into the oven and asked me “could you time them on my phone?”

While we waited. Me mum and my sister played memory. I won! Beep Beep! Went my phone.

“Mum! The gingerbread men are ready" the smell of the gingerbread men was delicious

Mum said we have got to let them cool.

We made some custard and we got some ice-cream and ate it yummy I licked my lips.

Road safety skills

Room 4 have been practicing our road safety skills on our bikes. We learned about the parts of a bike and how to keep ourselves safe when riding. Here are a few pics of the action.

Puppet Pals poem

Fergus and Sol have been busy making a Puppet Pals movie to show off their poem that they have been writing with Ms Nicholas. They finished it on Friday and here it is.

Swimming safely

Yesterday Room 4 had safe swimming lessons where we got to try on life jackets and practice some safe skills to do when we are in the water. We got to try out a huddle and link arms to paddle up and down the pool.

Hockey skills

Recently Room 4 has been learning the skills needed to play Hockey. We have practiced dribbling passing and even played a few games. Here are a few snaps of the action.
